Matthew 7:16,20
“Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”

There is a great difference between gifts and fruits. A Christmas tree, for instance, has gifts that appear instantly. On the other hand, an orange tree has fruits that are produced with patience and time.

Many Christians are looking for gifts. That is why we do extended fasting and prayer, looking for breakthroughs from God. That is why we cry to God to give us cars, jobs, husbands and wives, etc. As a pastor I pray for many people, but I am yet to pray for someone who is interested in the fruits of the Spirit. Rather, we are more interested in experiencing power, healing, and the miraculous.

Very few Christians cry for the fruits of the Spirit. You would hear such a person praying, “Lord, help me love my enemies; give me joy in the midst of confusion; give me peace when I have failed my papers; help me to be good to those who do not deserve it; give me gentleness; may I be meek when I am talking to my husband,” among others.

One of the things we need in our lives is the fruits of the Spirit and not gifts!
