Why is it that we sometimes struggle to obey God? There seems to be a barrier between God and us. I want us to examine some barriers to God’s word.
Jeremiah 22:21
“I spoke to you in your prosperity, But you said, ‘I will not hear.’ This has been your manner from your youth, That you did not obey My voice.”
1. Money
The first barrier in this verse is money or prosperity. Jesus said it is more difficult for a rich man to get to Heaven. This is because riches make you materially self-sufficient; they provide comfort and physical security. Money also can solve many problems so a rich person may not find it necessary to obey God.
One thing rich people forget is that the highest blessings are invisible. For example: eternal life, peace, joy, love, or contentment cannot be bought-God has to give them to you.
2. Youth
The second barrier is youth. God spoke to Israel in her youth but she will not listen. The word youth stands for strength. There is a propensity to rely on yourself when you are strong. You can easily push God’s word aside. Solomon said, “remember your creator in the days of your youth before the evil days come.”
Remove the barrier of money and youth and be obedient to the word of God.
