Ecclesiastes 5:10
“He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.”
Sometime ago, I was listening to President George Bush giving a speech and he said, “Every man has to be free to pursue happiness.” This struck me. One force which drives people to acquire money is the pursuit of happiness. One of the things we hope to achieve when we have money is happiness, satisfaction, and contentment.
In Luke 12:19-20, we are told of a rich man who acquired a lot of wealth. His aim was to be content. God called him a fool. Why? Because he was not rich in the sight of God. He was required in heaven for discussions. Listen, contentment is not something you buy; it is something God gives.
Solomon tells us silver and abundance cannot ultimately bring contentment. We cannot acquire contentment and satisfaction mainly by the amount of money we have. You can have a lot of money and still not be satisfied.
Satan often whispers to us, “If only you had more money, you will be happy.” It is not true! The life of a man does not consist of the abundance of his possessions. It is primarily God-given.
The presence of God is the foundation of happiness. David said in Psalm 16:11, “In thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”
If you do not know Christ, accept him into your heart and his presence will bring happiness. If you know him, cultivate his presence through prayer, reading his word, and holiness, and you will experience happiness.
