One day, I had a conversation with a woman who had a problem with her husband concerning his involvement in the church. Her problem was that her husband was too engrossed in the work of the Lord. Prior to that, I had been speaking to someone who was complaining about how her husband was a womanizer and would not even sleep at home. I said to the first woman “if that is your problem, you have a good problem because I know many women who will be very happy to exchange your problems.” I continued “your husband will, by all means, serve something. If he stops serving God what we cannot tell is what he will serve next.”

1 Samuel 12:21

And turn ye not aside: for then should ye go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain.

Samuel told Israel to keep on seeking God because there was only one bad alternative.

Serving vain means vain or empty things which are without earthly or eternal value or things which will not profit or benefit them in the long run. An example is when you serve money. The love of money has destroyed many homes and human lives. When you don’t encourage your kids to serve the Lord and go to church, they may choose to serve drugs, alcohol, and sex.

Let us choose to serve God because it’s the best alternative: As for me and my house, we shall serve the Lord.
