1 Samuel 12:21
“And turn ye not aside: for then should ye go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain.”

One day, I had a conversation with a woman who had a problem with her husband’s involvement in church. Her problem was that, her husband was too engrossed in the work of the Lord.

Prior to that, I had been speaking to someone who was complaining about how her husband was a womanizer and would not even sleep at home.

I said to the first woman, “if that is your problem, then you have a good problem because I know many women who will be very happy to exchange your problem.” I continued: “your husband will by all means serve something. What we cannot tell is what he will serve next if he stops serving God.”

Samuel told Israel to keep on seeking God because there was only one bad alternative. Serving “vain things” means serving empty things that are without earthly or eternal value, or things that will not profit or benefit them in the long run.

An example is when you serve money. The love for money has destroyed many homes and human lives. When you don’t encourage your kids to serve the Lord and go to church, they may choose to serve drugs, alcohol, or sex.

Let us choose to serve God because it’s the best alternative: “As for me and my house we shall serve the Lord.”
