Colossians 3:12-13

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

As Christians, we are encouraged to forgive; “forgive one another.” How can you forgive when you can feel the pain of betrayal, disloyalty, disappointment, wasted years and resources? These verses have instructions for us.

1. Don’t forget who you are; you are part of God’s chosen people.

In other words, you are a Christian and you have different standards. Don’t let other people’s conduct change your values.

2. Forgiveness is a decision.

You must “clothe yourself.” This implies an act of the will. You can decide to be compassionate and kind.

3. Humility.

Until you “humble” yourself to obey God’s word, you cannot forgive.

4. Be “Patient.”

The reward and blessing of obeying God’s word can only be revealed with time. This notion can help you when you don’t see any immediate benefit.

5. Empathy.

Put yourself in other people’s shoes. You have to “bear with each other.” This suggests a symbiotic relationship. Remember that you have also wronged others, and you need their forgiveness as much as they need yours.

6. Finally, Christ “forgave you”.

Forgive because you have been forgiven, and you will require forgiveness in the future.
