“Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.”
Many people dream of a wonderful marriage but not everyone attains it. One necessary ingredient needed for a successful marriage is the ability to submit to each other. You may say, “I thought it is only women who are supposed to submit to their husbands.” This is largely true, but according to this verse there are times when men have to submit. Why, you may ask? Because God sometimes chooses to speak through a wife.
There was a time in the life of Abraham when God asked him to submit to Sarah and let Hagar, his concubine, and Ishmael, his son, leave their marital home. This was against Abraham’s wishes because the situation favoured him. However, because he feared God he submitted to Sarah’s direction. I want you to note that Sarah did not force Abraham to tow her line; God did.
There are many times in my own life when I have discerned God speaking through my wife. It takes discernment and the fear of God to make men submit to their wives. Listen to your wife carefully, knowing God can use her to speak to you.
Open your ears and discern between the emotional and the spiritual, for it may well be the Lord speaking through your wife and not the devil!
