1 Samuel 15:23
“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king.”
Saul disobeyed God when he told him to destroy the Amalekites and everything they had. He spared Agag the king and saved some of the valuable things for himself. When Samuel confronted him about his disobedience he told him the nature of stubbornness.
He said stubbornness is like iniquity and idolatry. Why?
Stubbornness is the refusal to change your ideas or your actions.
Idolatry is the root cause of stubbornness. It means an immoderate attachment to something.
I once knew a gentleman who was obsessively attached to drinking. He could not change his mind or actions towards drinking. Alcohol had become an idol in his life.
There are also people who have a very strong attachment to money and will be prepared to do anything for it. Money is their idol. This logically leads us to the next description of idolatry: iniquity.
Iniquity means something that is unfair or evil. A strong attachment to something can make you do evil. For example, an excessive love for money can lead you into corrupt practices and make you transgress God’s word.
Are you being stubborn towards God? It’s time to break the idol in your heart.
