Your delight is something you enjoy greatly or something that gives you great pleasure.

What are some of the things that God enjoys?

This Psalm lists some of the delights of the Lord and ranks them.

Psalms 51:16-17
“You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, you God, will not despise.”

Three things are listed here; sacrifice, burnt offerings, and a broken spirit. Let’s look at them individually.

Sacrifice.
Sacrifice is part of Christianity. People sacrifice their time, energy, jobs, opportunities, and even relationships to serve the Lord. We are even told to present our bodies as a living sacrifice.

Burnt offerings.
Animals were purchased and offered as burnt offerings to the Lord. I will liken this to financial sacrifices. People give offerings and tithes to support the ministry, and this is commendable. However, there is an offering that God delights in, above the first two. What’s that? A broken spirit.

What does it mean to have a broken spirit? The word translated as broken in Hebrew means to break down. Contrite means to crush. I will summarize it with a single word; a humble heart, a heart that has been crushed and reformed by God’s word.

Let’s stay humble before the word because God delights in it.
