‘And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbor in the word of the Lord, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him. Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the Lord, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.’
1 Kings 20:35-36
There are times in life when we have to smite or cause pain to the people we love. Our failure to do this can lead to our own destruction.
Sometimes, you can be in love with someone you know will eventually destroy you. Your refusal to “smite” or break that relationship can cause serious problems for you in the future. Sometimes, you have to “smite” yourself. You may have to deny yourself of your dream home because if you buy it, it will lead to your financial ruin.
In this story, the neighbour refused to “smite” or cause pain to the Prophet because he probably did not want to have a bad relationship with him. Sometimes, you must “smite” or dissociate yourself from friends you love in order to save your relationship with God, your marriage or your future. This man refused to “smite” and was eaten by a lion.
Smite what you have to smite before a “lion” eats you up.
