Proverbs 20:22
“Say not thou, I will recompense evil;but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.”
There are times in life when we may feel we have not been treated fairly. Sometimes in marriage, one partner can feel exploited and abused financially and emotionally. Sometimes at work or in business, you may feel cheated. Maybe, something you were promised failed to materialize, or you were overlooked when promotion came.
The temptation may be to retaliate by rewarding evil for evil. This may be understandable, but it is not spiritual. What should be your response?
1. Refer your case to the Lord; “Wait on the lord”: We should be willing to put our faith and trust in God, that He can deliver justice on our behalf.
2. Be patient; “wait”: We are told to “wait.” The wheels of justice can turn slowly, and it may seem to you God is doing nothing. However, we are told to be patient whilst God works on the case.
3. Do not retaliate by taking the law into your own hands; “Say not thou, I will recompense evil.” Justice is dispensed by courts, even in human terms. Therefore, we must decide not to take the law into our own hands. God is a better judge.
4. God will “save you”: When we have handed over justice to God by faith, we put our trust in the fact that God will save us.
