The function of a shield is to protect you. One of the things we need the most in this present world is protection.

The threats and attacks are coming from multiple sources. Marriage is under attack, our finances are under siege and Christians are under fire from the world.  Sin is being extolled and proliferated. Armed robbers and terrorists are growing in numbers.

How can we protect ourselves? The word of God can.

Proverbs 30:5

“Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.”

First of all, this verse reminds us of its protective qualities: it’s a shield.

Secondly, we are told one important quality of the word of God; it’s pure.

It’s only in its pure form that it acts as a shield because it can be corrupted.

Things are corrupted when something is added or removed from it. For example, if I put sugar in a bottle of Coke or remove the gas from it I have corrupted it.

We should not corrupt the word with our opinions, compromise, or worldly standards.

Finally, we must trust in the word. Trust is to believe that something is reliable. We may not understand it but we can trust it.

When we take these steps the word becomes a shield that protects us from all forms of danger. Trust in the pure word of God and take up your shield.
